Another trip to the St. Louis zoo this summer lead to me trying my hand at photographing butterflies. It did not go so well, I think mostly because of my choice of lens. A macro lens is needed for a sharp image, and my Pentax 55mm lens just isn’t sharp enough for the kind of detail I wanted.
So these two images were taken at the St. Louis Zoo in the Mary Ann Lee Butterfly Wing of the Insectarium. The butterfly house is a geodesic dome filled with tropical plants and waterfalls and of course, lots of butterflies. The dome is small, and the walkways inside are narrow. It’s best to hit the dome up when the Insectarium is not crowded so you can take your time watching the butterflies zoom around.
