I had the opportunity for a quick visit to the Rock Castle State Historic site this year and was charmed by the quaint Federal style building and peaceful surroundings.
The original stone house was first built around 1784 by Daniel Smith, using stones from an onsite quarry. Over the next ten years the residence was updated and expanded into an eight room three-story building that housed Daniel Smith, his wife Sarah Michie and their two children, George and Polly. For next 200 years the Smith family owned the home and surrounding land before giving ownership to the state of Tennessee in 1969.
Today the historic site and 18 acres of land can be explored by visitors. The land, gardens and Smith Family Cemetery are free to visit, but to tour the home requires a small fee.
